lab report

global warming

Global Warming Current Event
• many scientists believe global warming has slowed
• lack of polar data proves that arctic is warming fast
• data on global warming only covers 84 percent of the planet
• polar regions are not taken into account in global warming data
• the arctic is warming at about eight times the speed as the rest of the planet
• Dr. Kevin Cowtan has made new data that includes polar regions
• data is collected using surface data, satellites, weather stations and arctic faring ships
• in all other parts of world it seems global warming has slowed
• with new data it is clear that warming has increased instead of slow
• 2 and a half times faster than previously thought
• global warming is recorded using high altitude weather stations, radiosonde, and satellite observations
• the old data set was named HadCRUT4
• the new set was done in Dr. Cowtan's spare time while he is actually a crystalogist
• old data set had only been over 16 years so it wasn't conclusive anyway
• old data set was based since 1997
I learned that old global warming data didn't take into account polar regions. I didn't know that data had only been recorded for 16 years at the time. Learning that the arctic warms about eight times faster than the rest of the planet surprised me.
Interdisciplinary: of or relating to more than one branch of knowledge
I wondered why they hadn't included the arctic regions in the previous data set. I would've thought that it would've been the first priority. In class  we learned that sea levels rise from ice melting because of global warming. This made me think they would've thought to look there first.
This article was very interesting. I learned many things I didn't  know and found kind of weird. I thought it was weird because if you were going to look for global warming, why only check part of the globe? but altogether the article was quite fascinating.

Global  Warming Cira Synthesis
Global warming is a natural process in which gasses like Co2 create a layer of gas that traps heat in the earth's atmosphere. This causes temperatures to rise rapidly, which can cause problems. Some of these problems are increase in sea level as icecaps melt and weather to become more severe. recently many islands near New Caledonia are threatening to be completely submerged in water, which would result in an extreme loss of biodiversity. The major cause of global warming is humans. As we go  about living we pump billions of gasses into the atmosphere. But there is a way that the world can keep this in balance with plants. Plants take in Co2 and release oxygen. Without Plants earth would overheat under the gas layer.
